The community is invited to take part in a reading adventure and celebration

Medford, Oregon (March 30, 2023) — Jackson County Library Services (JCLS) invites children and families to celebrate Día de los niños/Día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day—also known as Día) this April with special Día-themed programs and events. Día is a national initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to link children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures.

Throughout April, all are invited to take part in a Día-themed online reading adventure. Sign up at jcls.beanstack.org to learn more.

Participants can also pick up a Take & Make kit to learn about and make their own kilim art. A kilim is a flat, tapestry-woven carpet or rug traditionally produced in areas such as Iran, the Balkans, and the Turkic countries. Kits are available at the Medford Library, 205 South Central Avenue, beginning Saturday, April 1 while supplies last.

An in-person Día celebration will take place at the Medford Library on Saturday, April 29 from 12-5 p.m. The event will feature family-friendly activities, displays, free books, food, and fun. The celebration will also include performances by Ballet Folklorico Ritmo Alegre, Southern Oregon Japanese Association, and the Southern Oregon Chinese Cultural Association.

“Our mission is to connect people with information, ideas, and each other, and a program such as Día exemplifies this,” said Brystan Strong, JCLS Youth Services Coordinator. “It gives us a chance to highlight the people in our community and to allow them to share their cultures and gifts with others.”
