Participate in-person or online in the “Readers are Leaders” themed program

Medford, Oregon (June 11, 2021)—Jackson County Library Services (JCLS) launched its annual Summer Reading program on Tuesday, June 1. This year’s theme is “Readers are Leaders,” highlighting the traits needed to be a leader in the community, classroom, home, or on the playground. Now through August 31, residents of all ages are encouraged to participate in this free program by reading books, attending programs, and learning what it means to be a leader.

“If you have a child in school, the summer reading program is a great way to maintain reading skills and avoid the ‘summer slide’ (when reading skills drop over the summer) during break,” said Brystan Strong, Youth Services Coordinator at JCLS. “Parents can model good reading habits by participating alongside their kids. It’s also never too early to introduce your baby or preschooler to the library and the wonderful world of books and reading.”

“The JCLS Summer Reading Program is not just for kids,” added Carrie Turney Ross, JCLS Adult Services Coordinator. “It is also a time for adults to challenge themselves to read more, learn more, and have more fun!”

Register through the Beanstack app at Participants can download a reading log at or use the app to record books read or minutes spent reading to earn virtual badges and real-world prizes. Each branch will award prizes for all age groups, and participants are also eligible for system-wide grand prizes.

The Summer Reading program includes engaging virtual programs as well as limited in-person, outdoor events for patrons of all ages. Free “Take & Make” kits of hands-on activities will also be available for children, teens, and adults throughout the summer. Visit to view the program calendar and register for events.
