What is your job title, and for how long have you been an educator?
I am a 4th grade teacher for the Dual Immersion Program at Jewett Elementary School, an “Early Development Lead Teacher” for the LISTO program, and I have been a teacher for 26 years.

What is your favorite public library resource and why?
I often visit the Ashland library because I live in that town, but in my work as a teacher I have received a lot of support with resources from the Outreach program. That JCLS department serves all of Jackson County, and the programs it offers for the Latinx/a/o community are incredible.

Visito con frecuencia la biblioteca de Ashland porque vivo en esa ciudad, pero en mi trabajo como maestra he recibido mucho apoyo con recursos del programa de Alcance a la comunidad (Outreach). Ese departamento de JCLS sirve a todo el Condado de Jackson y los programas que ofrece para la comunidad latina son increíbles.
What book do you think would be helpful for educators to read, and why?
A book that helped me shift my understanding of the way children learn was: Sensory Integration and the Child, written by Jean Ayres. Some students do not learn as easily as others, and there is not always a diagnosis that helps us understand them, and many of these children demonstrate sensory disintegration, which affects their behavior, attention, self-regulation and, of course, learning.
¿Cuál libro crees que sería útil para los maestros leer, y por qué?
Un libro que me ayudó a cambiar mi visión sobre la manera de aprender de los niños fue: “La integración sensorial en el niño”, escrito por Jean Ayres. Muchos alumnos no aprenden de manera tan fácil como otros, y no hay un diagnóstico que ayude a entenderlos, y muchos de estos niños, presentan desintegración sensorial, lo cual afecta su conducta, atención, auto regulación y, por supuesto, el aprendizaje.
What do you see as the biggest challenges facing educators today?
Keeping students engaged in classes can be a big challenge. Teachers spend a lot of time searching for new resources, planning and designing learning activities that relate to the Oregon State Standards, and that are also fun. Putting it all together every day is a big challenge. In addition, students arrive with family and life experiences that are not always positive and come into the classroom with depression, sadness, anxieties, stress… teachers need to offer a space where students feel safe. That is crucial so that learning occurs, that they feel safe, and that they know that they are important, that what they feel and what happens to them is important. All of this means teachers face great challenges every day.
¿Cuál crees que es uno de los mayores retos para los maestros de hoy en día y por qué?
Mantener a los alumnos enganchados en las clases puede ser un gran reto. Los maestros usamos mucho tiempo buscando recursos novedosos, planeando y diseñando actividades didácticas que se relacionen con los estándares académicos de la Educación de Oregon y que además sean divertidos. Poner todo esto junto cada día, es un gran reto. Además, los alumnos vienen cargando con un gran costal de experiencias familiares que no siempre son positivas y llegan al salón de clases con depresiones, tristezas, ansiedades, estrés… los maestros necesitamos ofrecer un espacio donde los alumnos se sientan seguros. Eso es crucial para que el aprendizaje ocurra, que se sientan seguros y que sepan que son importantes, que lo que sienten y lo que les pasa es importante. Todo esto hace que los maestros enfrentemos grandes retos cada día.
What do you think educators should focus on right now?
They should focus on creating communities of experts, encouraging students to discover their talents and become aware that exploring their talents brings them joy. This contributes to neurological development by creating connections that make them feel good about themselves and also contribute to the enrichment of their community. If, for example, we have a group of students who like to read, we can create a reading club and find a way for them to share the books they recommend to young people their age. If we have some who like to write, we can create a writing workshop with the intention of publishing. If we have some who like to speak and who have a passion for a topic, we can create a Podcast to share that knowledge with the community. I believe that by focusing on the talents of the students they can learn in a way that engages them and motivates them to come to school.
¿En qué crees que los maestros se deben enfocar en este momento?
En crear comunidades de expertos, promover que los alumnos descubran sus talentos y tomen conciencia de que al explorar sus talentos les causa alegría, esto contribuye al desarrollo neurológico creando conexiones que les hace sentir bien sobre sí mismos y también contribuye al enriquecimiento de la comunidad. Si por ejemplo, tenemos a un grupo de alumnos que les gusta leer, podemos crear un club de lectura y buscar una forma de que compartan los libros que recomiendan a jóvenes de su edad, si tenemos a algunos que les gusta escribir, podemos crear y taller de escritura con la intención de publicar, si tenemos algunos que les gusta hablar y que tienen pasión por un tema, podemos crear Podcast para compartir esos conocimientos con la comunidad. Creo enfocándonos en los talentos de los estudiantes, es una forma en la que ellos pueden aprender de una forma que les enganche y motive a venir a la escuela.
What changes do you see happening in the field of education in the next few years?
Well, the educational field is very broad, but speaking of the classroom, I think that traditional education is going to change to an approach that demonstrates greater respect for how the brain learns most naturally, an approach which would have to include less time sitting in chairs, more time moving and creating.
¿Qué cambios vez que podrían ocurrir en el campo educativo en los siguientes años?
Bueno, el campo educativo es muy amplio, pero hablando del salón de clases, creo que la escuela tradicional va a cambiar a una escuela que respete más la forma natural de aprender del cerebro, la cual tendría que incluir menos tiempo sentados en sus sillas, más tiempo moviéndose y creando.
What is your personal favorite book? Why?
Personally, I use Peter H. Reynolds books a lot; I find them very inspiring and the students love them. Last year with my 5th graders, we read the first Harry Potter book in Spanish and I used it for dictation. It was a success! This school year I will use The Hobbit (also in Spanish) for reading aloud and for dictation. Choosing well-known books helps because as they listen, they can relate it to the movies or books that they have already experienced in English.

En lo personal uso mucho los libros de Peter H. Reynolds; me parecen muy inspiradores y a los alumnos les encantan. El año pasado con mis alumnos de 5to, leímos el primer libro de Harry Potter en español y lo use para hacer dictado, ¡fue un éxito! Este ciclo escolar utilizaré el Hobbit para lectura en voz alta y para dictado, también en español. Elegir libros clásicos ayuda a que cuando escuchan, pueden relacionarlo con las películas o con los libros que ellos mismos han leído en inglés.
