Named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library, the award honors Latinx/a/o writers and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latinx/a/o cultural experience in the United States in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.
Nombrado en honor a Pura Belpré, la primera bibliotecaria latina en la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York, la distinción rinde homenaje a los escritores e ilustradores latinos cuyas obras constituyen el mejor reflejo, afirmación y celebración de la experiencia cultural latina en Estados Unidos reflejada en la literatura infantil.
