Getting started exploring the outdoors can be uncomfortable, especially if you don’t have much experience, but with a little knowledge and preparation you will be ready to confidently hit the trail.

Windows in Time: “The Amazing Journey of Leonard Case and the Execution of Captain Jack”

The execution of four leaders of the Modoc Indian Tribe at Fort Klamath in 1873 received widespread coverage from newspapers across the country. It also drew the attention of an eccentric millionaire in Cleveland, Ohio—Leonard Case—who traveled by train, stagecoach, and hired carriage to witness the hangings in person. Join Todd Kepple as he examines how Case’s travel journal, recently obtained by the Klamath County Museum, sheds new light on the bitter conclusion to the Modoc Indian War.

Instructor and artist Deb Van Poolen will share how to use a tool called a “viewfinder” to draw the basic shape of plants and trees. Students will sketch and photograph the plants in the field, then head to tables to create finished drawings in pencil, pen, watercolor pencils, or markers. Pre-registration required.

Himalayan Blackberry was first cultivated in this region for its fruit but is now considered an invasive species. Learn basic plant identification and natural history, then learn how to remove this plant to use it as a natural dye. Offered in collaboration with Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission, the North Mountain Park Nature Center, and the Southern Oregon University Environmental Education graduate program.
